Tankers report incidents near Oman, raising Strait of Hormuz risk

One tanker reported damage to its engine room after being struck by an unknown projectile, while a second incident involved an explosion with no reported damage.

UKMTO said it received reports of two separate maritime incidents off Oman, including an attack in which a tanker was struck by an unknown projectile.

In the first incident, the tanker was hit about 11 nautical miles northeast of Oman’s Lima, and reported it was struck by an unknown projectile that caused damage to the engine room, leaving it not under command. UKMTO said there were no reported casualties or environmental impact.

Later, UKMTO reported a second incident about 21 nautical miles northeast of Oman’s Khasab, where the tanker master saw a large splash and an explosion close to the vessel, though no damage was reported.

Lima and Khasab are on Oman’s Musandam Peninsula at the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic shipping chokepoint through which about a fifth of global oil consumption passes, according to the report from Reuters via SCMP Economy.
