Lula says he is “in great shape” as he launches bid for a fourth term

Lula, 80, addressed a Worker’s Party convention in Sao Paulo attended by around 3,000 people and tied his campaign to plans to bolster Brazil’s defence industry and protect rare minerals.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, 80, said he was “in great shape” as he launched his candidacy for October elections, citing his stamina and overall health in remarks to his Worker’s Party convention in Sao Paulo, attended by about 3,000 people, according to SCMP Economy.

In his speech, Lula emphasized that he works out and walks for an hour, adding that he is far fitter than when he was first elected in 2002.

He also outlined campaign priorities that include boosting Brazil’s defence industry and protecting the country’s rare minerals, saying no outside power will access those resources without respecting Brazil’s sovereignty.

SCMP Economy reports that Lula returned to power three years ago after a period in jail on corruption charges that were later annulled.
