Solar supplied a record 14.4% of Britain’s electricity in July
The share rose 50% from a year earlier, when solar provided 9.6% of generation, after record monthly output and a jump in new installations.
Solar delivered a record 14.4% of Great Britain’s electricity in July, with solar farms and rooftop panels contributing more power to the grid than in any previous month, according to National Energy System Operator data cited by The Guardian Business.
The outlet said some UK areas recorded nearly twice the average sunshine hours for the time of year, helping solar surpass the prior monthly record of 12.4% set in May.
July’s solar generation was also 50% higher than a year earlier, when solar accounted for 9.6% of electricity generation, and new installation figures showed more solar added in the first half of 2026 than in any six-month period since 2011.
The data included 142,536 solar installations tracked in the period, putting 2026 on track to beat last year’s record additions, while the chief executive of Solar Energy UK highlighted solar’s shift from a minor part of the energy mix to a major contributor.
