Thin weekend Bitcoin liquidity can amplify ETF price gaps on Mondays
US spot Bitcoin ETFs trade only during traditional market hours, while BTC keeps moving over weekends, forcing ETF share prices to catch up when Wall Street reopens.
CryptoSlate reports that Bitcoin trades continuously across global exchanges, even when US markets are closed, while US spot Bitcoin ETF shares generally pause during the weekend and resume with Wall Street hours.
Because an ETF is priced against the underlying BTC activity that occurred while trading was halted, any major developments between Friday’s close and Monday’s open, such as tariff or war announcements, can translate into larger ETF share price gaps when trading restarts.
CryptoSlate notes that the NYSE core session runs from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. ET on business days, about 6.5 hours of deeper and more consistent ETF trading, with thinner liquidity outside the core window and limited weekend access.
The outlet also points to scale in the US ETF market, saying spot Bitcoin ETFs held roughly $77.5 billion in assets at the end of July, and citing iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) as holding $47.67 billion as of July 30, with more than 36 million shares traded that day and a median bid-ask spread of 0.03% over the prior 30 days.
