Alberta data centers spur new power fight for lithium mine projects
E3 Lithium said opposition tied to nearby data-center proposals is damaging goodwill around its Clearwater lithium project near Olds.
Alberta’s data-center buildout is spilling into mine development, with E3 Lithium saying that opposition to nearby proposals is harming community support for its Clearwater lithium project. According to Mining.com, E3 is advancing one of Canada’s larger battery metal projects near Olds, about 200 km south of Sturgeon County, where Meta Platforms began constructing a 1-gigawatt AI data center in July. E3 CEO Chris Doornbos told The Northern Miner that the company has faced engagement issues, adding that some data centers have come in without what it considers proper consultation. Mining.com also frames artificial intelligence as both a demand driver and a competitor for resources in mining. Data centers are expected to raise demand for commodities used in electronics and grid infrastructure, including copper, lithium, aluminum, uranium, and rare earths, while also competing for electricity, workers, equipment, and public approval that miners need to build projects. The article cites International Energy Agency expectations that global data-center electricity use could roughly double to about 950 terawatt-hours by 2030, alongside S&P Global forecasts for copper demand rising to 42 million tonnes in 2040 from 28 million tonnes in 2025. S&P Global projects that without large investments in mines, processing, and recycling, copper supply could fall about 10 million tonnes short.
