Daimler Truck to close Portland assembly plant, move production to Carolinas

The shift will eliminate 375 jobs in Portland while Daimler Truck keeps its headquarters and testing facilities there.

Daimler Truck plans to close its assembly plant in Portland, Oregon and shift production to plants in North Carolina and South Carolina, according to ConnectCRE.

The move is expected to result in layoffs of 375 workers. The company will keep its headquarters and testing facilities in Portland.

ConnectCRE reports that the Portland factory produces Freightliner and Western Star vehicles, while Daimler Truck already has operations in High Point, North Carolina and Gaffney, South Carolina.

ConnectCRE also notes that Daimler Truck North America created Daimler Truck Specialty Vehicles in the prior year by merging Thomas Built Buses of High Point with Freightliner Custom Chassis Corp., based in Gaffney, and the combined unit will have nearly 3,000 employees.
