Solana raises block compute capacity, but hot-state congestion remains
Solana increased its block compute limit to 100 million CUs from 60 million CUs, yet the writable compute cap for any single account stays at 12 million CUs, so demand for the same hot state can still bottleneck throughput.
Solana block capacity rose from 60 million to 100 million compute units on July 29, a 66.7% increase, expanding the total CU room a leader can include in a block. The change was implemented via SIMD-0286, which raised the overall block limit without altering the separate cap that governs its busiest accounts.
According to the Solana Foundation, 11.2% of blocks produced between the July 22, 2025 activation of the 60 million-CU limit and the latest increase used at least 56 million CUs, indicating the new ceiling applies to a subset of heavily utilized blocks. However, the maximum compute that can write to any single account within a block remains 12 million CUs, and the maximum block accounts-data size delta remains 100MB, limiting gains for workflows that compete on the same writable state.
CryptoSlate reports that while the added capacity creates more headroom for transactions touching unrelated accounts, it does not directly create more room for a congested hot account. If many transactions need to write to the same state-heavy account, they still compete within the unchanged 12 million-CU allowance, and state-heavy workloads can also hit the separate 100MB data-delta limit even when block compute appears available.
The outlet also notes that the larger block ceiling does not automatically translate into lower fee pressure, because Solana’s optional prioritization fee depends on a transaction’s requested CU limit and CU price. The technical proposal behind the change also cautions that larger blocks can take longer to execute and slow validator catch-up, which are design risks rather than confirmed current incidents.
