BitGo to switch WBTC cross-chain provider to Chainlink CCIP

The company will replace LayerZero for $7.3 billion of WBTC and said it will use CCIP by default for future assets while keeping control over token contracts and transfer settings.

CoinDesk reports BitGo is set to replace LayerZero with Chainlink’s CCIP as the exclusive cross chain provider for wrapped bitcoin, WBTC, covering $7.3 billion. The move is part of a broader migration wave that followed a $292 million exploit of the Kelp DAO LayerZero-powered bridge earlier this year.

According to CoinDesk, the value covered by announced LayerZero-to-Chainlink migrations now totals about $14.5 billion, nearly $15 billion. WBTC is a tokenized version of bitcoin designed to track BTC’s value and enable use across chains for DeFi use cases like trading, lending, and collateral.

CoinDesk also notes BitGo will standardize WBTC deployments using Chainlink’s Cross-Chain Token standard and use CCIP by default for future assets it issues. The structure allows BitGo to retain control over its token contracts and to set rate limits and other transfer controls between blockchains.

BitGo previously selected LayerZero in 2024 to expand WBTC across blockchains, initially using it for deployments on Avalanche and BNB Chain, CoinDesk said. The announcement did not specify when the broader migration will be completed.
