Indian stocks slip as realty, FMCG and tech drag Nifty and Sensex lower

The Nifty 50 ended 0.6% down at 24,614 and the Sensex fell 0.3% to 78,428, with the new Closing Auction Session linked to heightened caution among investors.

LiveMint Markets reports Indian shares ended lower on Tuesday, reversing Monday’s sharp gains as declines in realty, FMCG and technology stocks pulled down the benchmarks.

The Nifty 50 closed 0.64% lower at 24,614, while the Sensex declined 0.27% to 78,428. The divergence between the two indices extended for a second straight session after the introduction of the Closing Auction Session.

The Closing Auction Session, introduced on Monday, pools buy and sell orders after regular trading ends and sets a single auction price that becomes the official closing price for eligible stocks. The Nifty Midcap 100 fell 0.62%, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 rose 0.20%, despite profit booking building through the session.

Selling pressure intensified into the close in real estate, FMCG and consumer durables, with the Nifty Realty index down 2.15% and the Nifty FMCG index down 1.60%. Sector performance was mixed elsewhere, with Nifty Media up 2.0% and Nifty Metal up 0.50%, while LIC was the biggest laggard, dropping 8.7% to ₹391 after the government’s 2.5% Offer for Sale opened for non-retail investors, according to LiveMint Markets.
