London approves Brick Lane Truman Brewery redevelopment for datacentre
The government decision backs a plan proposing six new blocks, including a datacentre and 44 homes, after Tower Hamlets previously had a 350-home scheme.
A £500 million redevelopment of the Truman Brewery estate on Brick Lane in east London has been approved, paving the way for construction of a datacentre, offices and apartments despite opposition from Tower Hamlets council and local campaign groups, according to the Guardian Business.
The housing secretary, Angela Rayner, backed the outcome through a letter issued on her behalf by housing minister Matthew Pennycook, rejecting demands that the site be used for hundreds of homes instead of the current proposal.
Campaigners through the Save Brick Lane coalition said the project would bring a noisy, energy intensive development and argued it could disrupt the community, with one group warning it would push long term residents out.
Under the proposed plan by Truman Estates and Zeloof LLP, six new blocks would be built alongside a datacentre, offices and 44 homes, plus facilities including a cinema, exhibition and events space, art galleries, shops, cafes, restaurants, community spaces and a food market.
