Over 1,000 register for Hong Kong’s combined taxi and ride-hailing test

Hong Kong’s Transport Department replaced the stand-alone taxi exam with the combined written test, and it plans extra exam sessions if demand rises.

More than 1,000 people have registered for Hong Kong’s new combined written test covering taxi and ride-hailing services, the Hong Kong government said, with lawmakers expecting strong interest ahead of a regulatory shift next year. South China Morning Post Economy said the first day of online registration drew a “positive” response, with more than 1,000 applications by 6pm Monday.

The change follows the Transport Department replacing a stand-alone taxi driver examination with a combined test, which allows candidates who pass to apply for either a taxi driving licence or a ride-hailing vehicle permit after completing required courses. The department said it would arrange additional examination sessions depending on demand.

Legislative Council transport panel chairman Ben Chan Han-pan said he expects more candidates to sign up for the written test to meet the requirement for applying for a ride-hailing vehicle permit, arguing the same test can qualify them to legally drive both types of services.

Another panel member, Mark Chong Ho-fung, said the combined written test was well received as expected, and that the industry has also seen more applications for the former taxi written test as drivers prepared in advance.
