AI Overviews cut real estate clicks, boosting Google Business Profile focus

A SparkToro analysis cited by HousingWire says 68% of U.S. Google searches ended without a click in early 2026, rising to 83% with AI Overviews and 93% in Google’s AI Mode.

HousingWire says real estate marketing is shifting from click driven search optimization toward Answer Engine Optimization as more consumers get recommendations inside AI generated responses without visiting external websites.

The article points to a SparkToro analysis using Similarweb data, showing 68% of U.S. Google searches ended without a click in early 2026, up from about 60% in 2024. It adds that when an AI Overview is present, 83% of searches generate no click to any external site, and in Google’s AI Mode the figure reaches 93%.

HousingWire also links the change to usage growth for Google’s AI features, noting Google reported at its 2026 I/O conference that AI Mode surpassed one billion monthly users and that query volume more than doubled quarter over quarter. With a larger share of local searches answered directly by AI systems, the click that traditional SEO targets is increasingly not made.

In response, the article says the data footprint that AI platforms rely on is becoming more important, with Google Business Profile management highlighted as a key requirement. It argues that while conventional SEO still matters because Google’s traditional search share remained near 90% in 2026, the marginal payoff of ranking on results pages that produce no clicks is declining, while being cited and recommended inside AI answers is gaining value.
