China’s military reshuffles senior roles after anti-corruption drive

South China Morning Post analysis says dozens of newly promoted officers have taken over key PLA bodies, including some elevated to full-general duties despite shorter tenures as lieutenant generals.

China’s military has undergone a leadership reshuffle following a sweeping anti-corruption drive, with new officers stepping into de facto leadership roles across People’s Liberation Army bodies, according to an analysis by the South China Morning Post.

The outlet said it reviewed official insignia and protocol seating from state media coverage of recent meetings, finding that dozens of commanders moved into roles held by their ousted predecessors. Several of the new leaders are said to have taken portfolios previously held by full generals, while others were promoted to lieutenant general less than a year ago.

SCMP reported that some of these lieutenant generals are about the same age as the full general predecessors were when assuming the comparable leadership posts. A Chinese political expert, cited by SCMP, said many have relatively short tenures as lieutenant generals but are performing full-general duties.

The report frames the changes as coming at a pivotal time for China’s military and political trajectory, noting that the newer leaders may need time to adapt and establish leadership within their departments.
