Indian stocks end near flat after RBI holds rates steady

The Sensex rose 152 points to 78,581 and market cap at BSE-listed firms added about ₹ 2.5 lakh crore in the session, as the rupee finished stronger.

Indian equities finished broadly flat on Wednesday, August 5, after the Reserve Bank of India kept its policy stance unchanged, supporting sentiment even as inflation edged up.

The Sensex gained 152 points, or 0.19%, to end at 78,581, while the Nifty 50 inched up 10 points, or 0.04%, to close at 24,624.65. Mid and small-cap segments outperformed, with the BSE 150 Midcap index rising 0.34% and the BSE 250 Smallcap index up 0.70%, according to LiveMint Markets.

The RBI maintained the policy repo rate at 5.25% and kept a neutral stance for its August 2026 meeting. The central bank also projected FY27 GDP growth of 6.7% and expected CPI inflation to be 5%, while the session saw BSE market capitalization rise to ₹ 492 lakh crore from ₹ 489.5 lakh crore the prior session, adding roughly ₹ 2.5 lakh crore, the outlet said.

Geopolitical and commodity factors also played a role, with LiveMint Markets noting oil traded near $80 a barrel and Indian markets gradually moved lower as crude concerns persisted. The Indian rupee rose 15 paise to close at 95.13 per dollar, provisional data showed.
