Prabowo signals readiness to visit North Korea to reopen dialogue

The president said South Korea asked him to urge North Korea to open dialogue during his April visit to Seoul, but Pyongyang has rebuffed repeated overtures and labeled South Korea a hostile nation.

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto said his South Korean counterpart asked him to call on North Korea to open some kind of dialogue during a visit to Seoul in April, and he indicated he is willing to make a trip to Pyongyang if requested, according to SCMP Economy.

Prabowo said Indonesia is viewed as having no interest in meddling in other countries’ domestic affairs and described his stance as firm, while highlighting the potential diplomatic role of Jakarta as a bridge between Seoul and Pyongyang.

He also said Lee Jae Myung had raised the idea after easing efforts toward North Korea, which South Korea has pursued to reduce tensions, with Lee seeking a path to dialogue.

Prabowo’s comments come amid skepticism at home, as SCMP Economy noted analysts warn Indonesians may not support additional overseas travel given negative public opinion about Prabowo’s frequent trips, and it said North Korea has not even extended an invitation.
