China and Russia complete a full naval circuit around Japan

Japan’s defense ministry said Chinese Type 055 and Type 052D destroyers, with a Type 903 support ship, were spotted transiting the Korea Strait between Sunday and Monday after a 17-day joint patrol.

South China Morning Post Economy reports that a joint China-Russia naval patrol around Japan highlighted growing military cooperation, according to analysts cited in the story.

Japan’s defense ministry said three Chinese naval vessels, including Type 055 and Type 052D missile destroyers alongside a Type 903 support ship, moved southwest through the Korea Strait between Sunday and Monday, while Japanese Maritime Self-Defence Force ships and patrol aircraft carried out surveillance and intelligence-gathering along the route.

The maneuver followed the end of a 17-day China-Russia joint patrol. A map posted by Japan’s defense ministry on social media showed the ships transited through the Miyako Strait near Okinawa on July 16, then sailed near the Ogasawara Islands and through waters south and east of Japan before reaching the La Perouse Strait between Hokkaido and Russia’s Sakhalin Island on July 27.

Including the Korea Strait passage, the Chinese warships conducted what the report describes as a full circuit around Japan.
