SR-22 certificates can raise car insurance premiums for high-risk drivers
An SR-22 is a filing by insurers with the state after certain violations, and drivers generally must request it rather than having it filed automatically.
Yahoo Finance explains that an SR-22, also called a certificate of financial responsibility, is a form an auto insurer files with a driver’s state to show the driver meets that state’s minimum car insurance requirements.
The outlet says SR-22 filings are typically required after serious motor vehicle violations, including reckless driving or a DUI/DWI conviction, and state rules vary, with some states not requiring SR-22 at all.
According to Yahoo Finance, insurers do not file SR-22 forms automatically, so drivers usually must contact their insurer and request the filing, and in cases where they do not have coverage they may need to buy insurance from a provider willing to submit an SR-22.
Yahoo Finance adds that SR-22 requirements are commonly tied to reinstating a driver’s license, including after a suspension, and they may also apply when a hardship license is involved, with the hardship license limiting driving to specific purposes or locations.
