Chinese satellite records crash of Falcon 9 rocket debris on the Moon
The satellite developer said the incident offered a way to test its space-based situational awareness system.
A newly launched Chinese satellite tracked a piece of SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket debris crashing into the Moon and captured footage of the impact, according to SCMP Economy. The outlet reports that the images show no visible plume, a detail consistent with observations from other scientists and telescopes soon after the crash on Wednesday.
SCMP Economy adds that the monitoring documented the impact and served as a performance test for the technology used to track objects in space. The satellite’s developer, Beijing-based aerospace company ATmoto Technology, also known as Aotian Technology, said the test was a way to evaluate the operational capabilities of its space-based situational awareness system.
The company described the Falcon 9 upper-stage debris impact as an unplanned space event, but one that became a useful window for validating the system’s performance, SCMP Economy reported.
