Jetstar to charge for overhead locker space in Asia-Pacific flights

Starting next year, Jetstar bookings will include one underseat bag for free, while larger overhead bags will cost A$25 to A$52 per flight.

Jetstar will begin charging passengers for overhead locker space as of February next year, testing how far Asia-Pacific budget carriers can go with unbundled fees beyond the ticket price, according to SCMP Economy.

The airline said flight bookings will include one underseat bag at no extra cost, while a larger bag stored in the overhead compartment could cost from A$25 to A$52 (US$17.60 to US$36.60) per flight.

Jetstar described the change as a shift from a strict weight limit to a simpler size based carry on baggage model, and said it is meant to streamline boarding and make better use of overhead space.

SCMP Economy noted aviation analysts called the plan an “extreme” form of unbundling, and Jetstar chief executive Stephanie Tully said the update should also help more flights depart on time.
