Root Inc. posts 12% rise in Q2 net income and improves combined ratio

In the quarter, Root’s combined ratio fell to 92.1 from 95.2 a year earlier, while policies in force rose 6% to 483,921.

Root Inc. reported second-quarter 2026 net income of $25.4 million, up 15% from the same period a year ago, according to Insurance Journal. The auto insurer also said its quarterly combined ratio improved to 92.1, compared with 95.2 in the prior-year quarter.

Root attributed its approach to technology and data, pointing to advances in AI and foundation models that it says help generate predictive insights from unstructured information. The company said its data assets include 37 billion miles of driving data and more than 900,000 claims filed.

The company reported it operated in 37 states after adding New Jersey. Root ended Q2 with 483,921 policies in force, up 6% from last year, and said partnerships and independent agents accounted for about 51% of new writings in Q2, up from about 44% in Q2 2025.

Root also announced a partnership with Jerry, an insurance shopping platform, aimed at expanding its presence across digital marketplaces. Insurance Journal reported that Root said its competitive direct channel remained challenging, and it is maintaining discipline.
