Auto claimants contact attorneys within days, IRC survey finds
The IRC surveyed more than 2,000 U.S. adults in July 2026 and found 80% had reached attorney contact within weeks.
Nearly half of auto injury claimants who hired an attorney did so within days of an accident, according to a survey by the Insurance Research Council, with 80% making attorney contact after weeks had passed.
The IRC found that seven in 10 claimants from the past three years said they consulted or hired an attorney at some point during their claim.
The report drew on responses from more than 2,000 U.S. adults surveyed in July 2026 and update prior research on consumer views of legal representation in auto insurance claims.
The findings come as attorney involvement is described as a primary cost driver amid rising claim severity, with more than nine in 10 respondents saying they saw or heard attorney advertising in the past year.
