US ship loads rice and will add wheat for Kenya under Food for Peace
The shipment will include 28,420 tonnes of rice and an additional 20,000 tonnes of wheat, intended to help feed more than 1 million Kenyans facing starvation this year.
The USDA-administered Food for Peace program loaded a vessel bound for Africa on Aug. 5, starting with a cargo of rice at a New Orleans port, according to World Grain.
The ship received 28,420 tonnes of rice in New Orleans and then set sail for Houston, where it will add 20,000 tonnes of wheat before continuing to Kenya.
US officials said the wheat and rice are expected to feed more than 1 million Kenyans facing starvation this year, with the United States described as a long-time provider of global food assistance.
World Grain also reported that after a year of uncertainty over Food for Peace and a drop in shipments, a December 2025 interagency agreement allowed USDA to take the lead in operating the program, and industry groups urged Congress to make that transfer permanent in the next farm bill.
