Major money managers hit by attempted cyberattacks using vishing

Point72 said it was attacked but had no initial indication that client information was stolen, while Two Sigma reported it thwarted a vishing attempt aimed at accessing sensitive data.

Hackers launched a wave of sophisticated cyberattacks targeting information systems at major money managers, including hedge funds, according to people familiar with the matter cited by Insurance Journal. Point72 Asset Management told investors it had been attacked, and its initial indications were that no client information was stolen, with the firm still reviewing the incident.

The attempted intrusions also reached other major hedge funds, including Millennium Management, Two Sigma Investments and Citadel, as well as several private equity firms, the people said. The attack involved vishing, or voice phishing, where cyber criminals mimic voices in phone calls or messages to trick employees into revealing sensitive information or granting access.

Two Sigma, which oversees $75 billion of assets, said it thwarted an attempt to access sensitive data. A spokesperson said its security team responded quickly to an attempted vishing campaign targeting Two Sigma and other investment managers, and there was no indication of impact to data or systems, and the firm would continue monitoring.

Insurance Journal also noted that cybersecurity breaches on Wall Street have increased over the past year, as artificial intelligence tools can make attacks cheaper and easier to launch at scale. The story added that FINRA has been in contact with member firms about recent attempted breaches, while a June post from a Google cybersecurity unit described a wave of attacks this year using vishing tactics against professional services firms.
