Beijing hypersonic anti-ship missiles could shift naval tactics in Taiwan

Analysts say China’s growing anti-ship missile platforms may strengthen its ability to deny access in the first island chain and potentially divert US and allied navies during a Taiwan Strait contingency.

Beijing’s expanding and diversifying anti-ship missile capabilities, including hypersonic systems, are expected to improve China’s denial posture in the first island chain, according to analysts cited by SCMP Economy.

The outlet points to a recent CCTV video showing a Type 052D destroyer firing a YJ-20 hypersonic anti-ship missile from a vertical launch system, as an example of the missile platform advance.

In a potential Taiwan Strait contingency, SCMP Economy says the development could complicate US and allied planning by diverting naval forces from direct warfare.

The outlet also notes that while most countries, including the United States and its allies, do not recognize Taiwan as an independent state, Washington opposes any attempt to take the self-ruled island by force and remains committed to supplying it with weapons.
