SanDisk and SK hynix unveil High Bandwidth Flash standard

The new HBF standard targets AI memory bottlenecks by delivering up to 3.0 TB/s bandwidth and up to 512 GB capacity using the UCIe interface.

SanDisk has partnered with SK hynix to unveil what the companies describe as the first High Bandwidth Flash, a next generation memory standard aimed at improving performance for AI workloads. The standard is designed to close the gap between high bandwidth memory and traditional solid state drives, with bandwidth ranging from 0.4 TB/s to 3.0 TB/s and capacities up to 512 GB.

The effort uses the industry standard UCIe interface to support compatibility with GPUs and CPUs. It also includes specifications for packaging, reliability, and software input output, according to the announcement described by Yahoo Finance.

The companies plan to speed HBF adoption through consortium activity involving Alphabet and Tenstorrent. Yahoo Finance frames the technology as potentially reshaping AI inference infrastructure, while also opening a new growth opportunity for SanDisk.

The article also notes that SandDisk stock has been a standout AI infrastructure winner, with gains of 2,776.9% over the past 52 weeks and 410.2% year to date, despite a correction of more than 40% from June highs. Over the past five trading sessions, the stock has been down 5.4%, after a 6.0% gain on Aug. 3.
