Sensex and Nifty end week higher as US data focus grows

Midcap and smallcap indices rose more than the benchmarks, as crude oil’s sharp decline and softer labor signals helped ease inflation fears tied to Fed expectations.

Indian markets closed the week with moderate gains despite elevated volatility, as investors weighed the Reserve Bank of India’s monetary policy decision, the implementation of a new closing auction session framework for F&O stocks, and ongoing geopolitical uncertainty, according to LiveMint Markets.

For the week, the Sensex rose 0.52% to 78,499.17, while the Nifty gained 0.77% to settle at 24,570.65. Broader measures outperformed, with the midcap index up 0.81% and the smallcap index up 2.61%.

Strategists said attention is turning to upcoming US labor market and inflation data to gauge the Fed’s policy trajectory. They also pointed to domestic CPI and WPI inflation readings and credit growth trends as key inputs into India’s growth versus inflation outlook.

In comments carried by LiveMint Markets, Geojit Investments Head of Research Vinod Nair said markets regained stability after an initially volatile start tied to the new F&O CAS framework. He linked improved sentiment to a sharp decline in crude oil prices, which supported expectations of easing inflationary pressures and helped soften US bond yields and the dollar, with safe-haven demand continuing to support gold prices.
