China invites 60 experts to Beidaihe summer retreat spanning tech fields
The guest list, published via Xinhua, points to a mix of basic research and near term development priorities aligned with China’s 15th five year plan through 2030.
China’s central government has invited 60 scientific, technological and academic experts to its annual summer retreat at Beidaihe, according to state news agency Xinhua, reflecting Beijing’s emphasis on innovation amid intense competition with the United States.
The Communist Party’s Central Committee and the State Council, China’s cabinet, held the retreat from August 1 to 7, with the selected experts covering fields including defense engineering, semiconductors, deep sea equipment, artificial intelligence, particle astrophysics, advanced manufacturing and healthcare, as well as the digital economy.
The selection suggests China is aiming to pair long term basic research with efforts to tackle immediate technological and development needs, the report said.
Xinhua also tied the focus to China’s 15th five year plan, which designates “self reliance and strength in science and technology” as a major objective through 2030.
