China ramps nuclear reactor component production faster than the West

The article says China added two new nuclear units over a similar period in contrast to the United States, which added just two new units as delays and financing challenges slowed buildout.

China’s nuclear buildout is outpacing Western capacity, according to SCMP Economy, with foreign engineers surprised by how quickly major reactor components are assembled and shipped. The outlet describes visits to a Shanghai Electric plant where equipment including steam generators and reactor cores was already completed and ready for shipment, even to sites where construction had not started. Francois Morin, China director at the World Nuclear Association, said the scale helped the visiting engineers understand how China’s construction capability compares with Western ones.

SCMP Economy contrasts that pace with the United States, saying it added just two new units over the same period. The outlet attributes the slower US progress to lengthy delays and financing challenges.

Victor Nian of the Centre for Strategic Energy and Resources think tank, based in Singapore, said China is the only country with continuous construction experience, according to SCMP Economy.
