Chinese citizen pleads guilty over attempted export of US military gear

Sentencing is set for Oct. 19 after a federal judge accepted the guilty plea in Salt Lake City.

A Chinese citizen, Chen Dingwei, 29, pleaded guilty in US federal court over an attempt to buy US-made military equipment for export to China, according to the US Department of Justice as reported by SCMP Economy.

Prosecutors said Chen attempted to purchase military-grade satellite modems and radios made for the US military by US companies, which are barred from being exported to China under the US Arms Export Control Act.

US District Judge David Sam accepted the guilty plea in Salt Lake City, Utah, and scheduled sentencing for Oct. 19, with Chen facing up to 20 years in federal prison if sentenced at the high end.
