Dollar firms as Trump rejects Iran war reparations demands
The Strait of Hormuz remains shut as US-Iran talks are effectively stalled, helping boost USD against major peers.
US President Donald Trump, in a post on Truth Social, pushed back on Iran’s calls for war reparations, arguing Tehran should be responsible for damage and deaths across Lebanon, Syria, Yemen and Gaza, according to FXStreet. FXStreet said the remarks land amid ongoing standoff dynamics, with the Strait of Hormuz still shut and US-Iran talks effectively stalled, while Oman and Iran work on a power sharing agreement for the strait. In FX markets, the outlet reported the US dollar was strongest against the Japanese yen and highlighted broader day to day moves across major pairs. It also cited uncertainty around reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the status of US-Iran talks as part of the backdrop for currency trading.
FXStreet further noted investors were weighing renewed Middle East tensions alongside Friday’s disappointing US jobs data, which it linked to support for the US dollar. The outlet also said EUR/USD eased toward the 1.1540 zone while GBP/USD pulled back toward the 1.3500 area, and that gold was advancing past $4,350 per troy ounce even as the greenback strengthened.
