Kazakhstan considers rerouting crude oil exports via Azerbaijan and Turkey
The plan is driven by disruptions tied to Ukrainian drone strikes affecting shipments through Russia’s Novorossiysk port and delays on the Caspian Pipeline Consortium in July.
Kazakhstan is weighing alternative routes for part of its crude oil exports to reduce reliance on its Black Sea outlet, amid ongoing threats to shipments from the Russian port of Novorossiysk. OilPrice reports that the Kazakh Ministry of Energy is considering seaborne and pipeline reroutes that would move crude through Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Turkey.
The Ministry said on Monday that transport through the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan system, shipments across the Caspian Sea via Azerbaijan, and the Baku-Supsa route are under consideration, alongside efforts to increase supply eastward via pipeline to China. The rerouting push comes as Kazakhstan’s exports have been severely disrupted in recent weeks by Ukrainian drone attacks on Russia’s oil export infrastructure, according to OilPrice.
OilPrice adds that in July alone, flows through the Caspian Pipeline Consortium, or CPC, were suspended for days, with suspensions occurring as many as three separate times. CPC carries crude from Kazakhstan’s Caspian coast to the Novorossiysk port, which handles most Kazakh crude exports from major fields including Tengiz, Kashagan, and Karachaganak operated by international firms such as Chevron.
