China hails Cuba as ties reach an 'unprecedented new height' amid US pressure

The comments came as the Trump administration increased pressure on Havana, following months of threats to seize control of the island.

China’s Communist Party International Department chief, Liu Haixing, met with Cuban officials in Havana and hailed China and Cuba as “good friends, good comrades and good brothers,” according to an official Chinese readout reported by SCMP Economy.

The readout said Liu described bilateral ties as reaching an “unprecedented new height,” adding that the two sides have consistently backed each other through a changing global landscape.

SCMP Economy said Liu told Cuban counterparts that China would continue to view and handle relations from a strategic, long term perspective.

The meeting comes as the Donald Trump administration has been piling more pressure on Havana, after months of threats by the US president to seize control of the island.
