Smart glasses raise discreet misconduct risks for schools and healthcare
Beazley warns smart eyewear can capture images, video, and audio more discreetly than phones, complicating supervision and privacy controls.
Smart glasses are creating fast-moving sexual misconduct exposure for schools, healthcare providers, and other organizations, according to Insurance Business, as the devices can look like ordinary eyewear while capturing images, video, and audio. The added discretion, the outlet reports, raises questions about supervision and privacy, and could determine where claims may land across different insurance programs.
Paul Nash, an executive risk leader for US and UK at Beazley, said smart glasses can be less obvious than using a smartphone camera, and people may not recognize when recording indicators are active. The recordings could involve children, vulnerable adults, employees, visitors, or sensitive information, and the material may be shared, edited, or used for bullying, harassment, and exploitation.
Insurance Business also notes that AI tools add to the risk by enabling recordings or images to be analyzed, altered, and repurposed. The coverage concerns extend beyond adult-on-child scenarios, with Nash warning that peer-on-peer misuse can occur, including students recording other students, teachers, or staff.
The outlet points to heightened scrutiny after videos reportedly captured without subjects’ knowledge circulated online, and it references restrictions at venues such as businesses, universities, and courtrooms. It also cites that Meta introduced software aimed at disabling cameras when tampering is detected, while Nash said education and healthcare are especially concerning because of the vulnerable populations they serve.
