Wildfire smoke brings unhealthy haze back to parts of Malaysia

The air pollution index hit as high as 182 in Sarawak’s Serian district, placing readings in the “unhealthy” range as Indonesian fires burn.

Smoke from major wildfires in neighboring Indonesia has returned to Malaysia, with at least two Malaysian states registering unhealthy air readings on Monday, according to SCMP Economy.

The outlet said the wildfire scorched 550 hectares of land in East Java, part of multiple fires that spread quickly last week as parts of Southeast Asia experience an unusually dry season.

In Malaysia, smog choked the southern half of Sarawak state on Malaysian Borneo, where the air pollution index reached 182 in the state’s southern district of Serian as of noon Monday.

Malaysia’s air quality readings between 100 and 200 are classified as “unhealthy,” while the government has urged residents to limit outdoor activity for as long as the haze persists because it has limited ability to address the source of the fires.
