Barrick appoints Sebastiaan Bock to lead international operations
Barrick said its Rest of World portfolio, which includes Africa, the Middle East, Latin America and Asia Pacific, produces more than 2 million gold-equivalent ounces annually and is expected to grow output by more than 20% over three years.
Barrick Mining has named Sebastiaan Bock to lead its international gold and copper business as the company prepares to separate its North American and overseas assets, Mining.com reported.
Bock takes over immediately as CEO of Barrick’s Rest of World division, overseeing projects across Africa, the Middle East, Latin America and Asia Pacific that produce more than 2 million gold-equivalent ounces annually. Barrick expects output from the portfolio to increase by more than 20% over the next three years, and said the international business has joint mine ownership and co-investment relationships with Chinese partners.
The appointment comes as Barrick advances plans to separate its Rest of World operations from its North American assets after resolving a dispute with Newmont over Nevada mining assets. Under a settlement announced Monday, Newmont agreed to pay Barrick $1.95 billion in cash within 30 days and to consent to Barrick’s planned initial public offering of its North American gold assets, which Barrick expects to complete by year-end.
Barrick said the split will put greater emphasis on the performance of the Rest of World division, and could support closer ties with Chinese partners through joint investments, technology access, and supply-chain support. Bock previously joined Barrick in 2019 as finance chief for Africa and the Middle East, later becoming chief operating officer for the region in 2022, and he will report to CEO Mark Hill until the North American IPO.
