China police detain about 8,200 suspects in organised crime crackdown
The Ministry of Public Security said the campaign targets online predatory lending and coerced consumption, including cases in Henan and Shandong.
Chinese police have dismantled more than 1,000 organised crime groups and detained about 8,200 suspects, according to the Ministry of Public Security, the South China Morning Post reported. The detentions come roughly 10 days after China’s top security official announced a year-long campaign against organised crime.
The ministry said the crackdown focuses on crimes that have become more covert and that spread rapidly online. It cited examples including online predatory lending, soft violence debt collection, coerced consumption, and online harassment.
In related actions highlighted by the ministry, police in Henan detained 41 people accused of using malicious complaints against online shops to extort money. In Shandong, police caught 27 suspects accused of causing traffic accidents to extort compensation from drivers, according to the report.
The campaign is also described as the latest in a series of efforts that began in 2018 to target organised crime, SCMP Economy noted.
