Commercial insurance renewal premium growth slows in Q2 2026

The Ivans Index put the average U.S. commercial premium renewal rate at 4.93% in Q2, down from 5.28% in Q1, with umbrella, commercial property, and liability all declining month over month.

Insurance Journal reports that U.S. commercial premium renewals rose year over year in July across most lines, with the exception of workers’ compensation, based on the Ivans Index. On a month over month basis, the outlet said commercial auto, business owners policy, general liability, commercial property, and umbrella premiums all declined in July, while workers’ comp increased.

For the second quarter of 2026, Insurance Journal cited Ivans data showing the average premium renewal rate averaged 4.93%, down from 5.28% in Q1. The report also highlighted that umbrella had the largest drop in renewal rate change from Q1 to Q2, falling from 9.36% to 7.96%, while workers’ comp averaged -1.37% in Q2 versus -1.73% in Q1. The Ivans Index analyzes more than 120 million data transactions, covering more than 38,000 agencies and 700 carriers and managing general agents.
