Sodium-ion batteries delivered for mine use as lithium alternatives grow

The first truck-mounted sodium-ion system reported in China has a 676 kWh capacity and is said to recharge in 20 to 25 minutes.

Batteries are drawing fresh attention as the search accelerates for alternatives to lithium, with sodium-ion technology emerging as a potential competitor for energy storage and power applications, OilPrice reports.

Earlier this month, Chinese media said the first truck with a sodium-ion battery was delivered to a mine, where it will be used. The battery system is reported to have a 676 kWh capacity and an energy density of 165 Wh/kg, according to Car News China.

OilPrice also notes that Hina Battery, the reported maker, claims its battery can be recharged in 20 to 25 minutes. The outlet adds that U.S. firms are also developing sodium-ion batteries, aiming to reduce reliance on China-dominated battery and critical mineral supply chains.

Despite the momentum, OilPrice cautions that sodium-ion batteries remain relatively new and have drawbacks, including lower energy density, which could limit broader adoption until technical issues are addressed.
