Winter canola could lift Midwest corn-soy rotation productivity and returns
A University of Illinois simulation found a diversified corn-canola-soy rotation could raise overall productivity by 18% and boost annual profits 10% to 23%, while keeping greenhouse gas intensity stable.
Winter canola added to a conventional corn-soy rotation in the US Midwest could improve both economics and environmental outcomes, according to a simulation study from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign published by World Grain.
The researchers simulated winter canola in a double-cropping system in Illinois using the DayCent model, running environmental conditions measured between 2019 and 2024. They compared a conventional corn-soy rotation with corn-canola-soy under four nitrogen fertilizer scenarios applied during canola growth.
Across metrics that included yield, biomass, greenhouse gas intensity, total emissions, carbon balance, and net return, the team ranked the corn-canola-soy system with full-season nitrogen support highest, saying it outperformed the conventional rotation on productivity, carbon and economics at the same time.
The study also reported that diversified scenarios outperformed the conventional rotation on profit, with annual profits 10% to 23% higher. The authors cautioned the findings are based on simulation and still need validation through upcoming field trials in Lee’s group, noting the potential benefits align with new incentives.
