Brent crude trades at $92.54 a barrel, up from a year ago

Oil prices are $4.99 higher than the previous morning and about $25.4 above a year ago, highlighting how supply and demand risks can quickly move the market.

Brent crude was trading at $92.54 per barrel as of 6:20 a.m. Eastern Time on August 11, 2026, according to Yahoo Finance. The price was $4.99 higher than the level from the prior morning, and roughly $25.38 above where it stood a year earlier.

Yahoo Finance noted that oil markets are driven largely by supply and demand, with risks tied to recessions or wars capable of shifting prices quickly. It also said crude oil is the biggest influence on what consumers pay at the pump, even though gasoline prices also reflect refineries, wholesalers, taxes, and retail markups.

The report added that the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve is intended to help protect energy security during crises, including sanctions, catastrophic storm damage, and war, and to cushion the impact of supply shocks. It said the reserve is not meant to address long-term problems.

Yahoo Finance also explained that changes in oil prices can affect natural gas demand, since some industries may substitute between fuels when possible, increasing natural gas use in certain operations. It added that Brent is widely used as a global benchmark for traded crude and is referenced by the U.S. Energy Information Administration in its Annual Energy Outlook.
