Chinese scientists’ lychee-longan hybrid Cuimi to enter trial sales

The first substantial harvest is expected next month, with trial sales set for mid-September after Cuimi’s multi province plantings produced several thousand jin this year.

Chinese scientists are preparing to test the market release of a new lychee and longan hybrid fruit named Cuimi, after its first substantial harvest is expected to ripen next month, according to SCMP Economy.

Cuimi was bred by crossing a Shixia longan, a cultivar in Guangdong, with a lychee, the research team said. SCMP Economy reports the hybrid has been planted across Guangdong, Sichuan and Yunnan, and that this year’s yield reached several thousand jin, with one jin equaling 500 grams.

Trial sales are scheduled for mid-September. SCMP Economy adds that the lead developer, Liu Chengming of South China Agricultural University, said about 90 percent of Cuimi’s genetic material comes from its mother, which influences its appearance and flavor.

The outlet also reports that researchers said Cuimi delivers about double the yield of the Shixia longan, is more cold resistant, and ripens 15 to 20 days later, a profile they say could expand longan cultivation areas and extend the selling season.
