Colombia earthquake death toll reaches 265 as aid arrives

President Abelardo de la Espriella said nearly 500 people were reported missing, while civilian-run databases put the figure above 4,100.

Aid shipments from regional partners began arriving in Colombia on Wednesday as search teams worked through rubble after a 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck the country’s west, buckling roads and crushing cars.

According to SCMP Economy, President Abelardo de la Espriella said at least 265 people died, and nearly 500 were reported missing, though civilian-run databases put the number above 4,100.

The president said more than 25,800 families were affected, as response efforts focused on the people unaccounted for, he told journalists in Colombia’s capital.

Teams continued searching in the hardest hit cities of Cali, Pereira, Manizales and Quibdo as officials and civilians pushed to find survivors before conditions worsened.
