Iran president says he met supreme leader amid war faction infighting
Masoud Pezeshkian told state television the meeting lasted seven or eight hours, as public disputes intensified over the war’s direction and domestic living standards.
SCMP Economy reports Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said he recently met with Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei after earlier remarks triggered speculation that the leader’s whereabouts were unclear. Pezeshkian told a reporter on the sidelines of a Tehran summit that the meeting lasted seven or eight hours and described it as “very good.”
The report says the two discussed how to tackle worsening living standards in Iran and that Khamenei’s main concern is “unity and cohesion” in the country. The statement came after weeks of public infighting in Tehran, including hardliners calling for Pezeshkian to resign over his support for an Iran-US peace deal.
According to the outlet, Khamenei has not been seen in public since taking over as ultimate authority in March, and his absence has coincided with disputes between political factions becoming more pronounced. The report also notes Khamenei was reportedly injured in an Israeli air strike on February 28 that killed his father and predecessor, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and Pezeshkian said Monday the supreme leader is in perfect health.
