Kazakhstan to cut wheat output and exports as oilseed acreage rises
The International Grains Council forecasts Kazakhstan grain production at 20.3 million tonnes in 2026-27, down from 24.2 million the prior year.
Kazakhstan is expected to scale back wheat production and shipments in 2026-27 as farmers expand into oilseeds, according to data cited by World Grain.
The International Grains Council forecast total grain production at 20.3 million tonnes for 2026-27, down from 24.2 million in 2025-26. Wheat output is forecast at 15.3 million tonnes, down from 19.3 million, while barley is projected at 3.2 million tonnes, down from 3.6 million.
The IGC projected Kazakhstan grains exports of 10.5 million tonnes in 2026-27, down from 13.4 million, including 9.0 million tonnes of wheat, down from 11.7 million, and 1.3 million tonnes of barley, down from 1.5 million.
The US Department of Agriculture Foreign Agricultural Service, in an April 29 Grain and Feed Annual report cited by World Grain, said exceptional harvests from the past two years are unlikely to repeat. It forecasts wheat production at 14 million tonnes in marketing year 2026-27, with wheat exports declining from a record 11 million tonnes to 7.5 million, citing a smaller harvested area and weather-related planting and growing conditions, while noting the acreage shift toward oilseeds in search of higher profits.
