National homebuilders face hidden costs from disconnected plan data

HousingWire says limited visibility into how active designs perform can lead to redundant plan revisions and weaker purchasing leverage as margins tighten.

HousingWire reports that even after years of investing in CRM, ERP and other technology, many homebuilders still lack a structured view of the homes they build, leaving product information scattered across drawings, spreadsheets, checklists and individual expertise.

The outlet says this gap makes it difficult for builders to answer basic portfolio questions, such as how many similar plans exist after renaming or redrawing, which designs generate the strongest margins, and why the same design may use different materials by location.

HousingWire adds that disconnected product data can also force builders to recreate products they already have, evaluate land opportunities without the full picture, and miss purchasing leverage, especially as margins tighten and competitive advantage increasingly depends on portfolio insights.

The story also points to the financial impact of redundancy across hundreds or thousands of active plans, citing an example where a conservative 10% redundancy rate could drive ongoing architectural and permitting updates, compounding costs across decisions.
