U.S. tightens security rules on federally funded China research
The latest restrictions land as U.S. and China prepare for summit talks in Washington aimed at managing an increasingly adversarial relationship.
The U.S. is tightening restrictions on federally funded scientific research collaborations with Chinese institutions, a move that further narrows one of the remaining areas of cooperation between Washington and Beijing, according to SCMP Economy.
The outlet said the curbs are part of a broader shift driven by security-related restrictions, blacklists, and rules that, while leaving the formal framework of cooperation intact on paper, reduce the practical space for collaboration.
SCMP Economy noted that the US-China Science and Technology Agreement, originally signed in 1979, was renewed in late 2024, but funding limits are now shrinking the ability to work together.
The timing is also notable because the restrictions come as President Xi Jinping prepares for summit talks with Donald Trump in Washington next month, intended to address a relationship that has grown more adversarial.
