UK issues energy market notice for reduced power margins during eclipse

The National Energy System Operator estimated a system margin shortfall of about 1.2 GW from 18:00 to 20:00 local time on Aug. 12 due to reduced solar generation.

The UK has issued an energy market notice warning of reduced power supply margins during a solar eclipse on Wednesday evening, as a heatwave drives high electricity demand across Britain and much of Europe.

According to OilPrice, the National Energy System Operator said the period from 18:00 to 20:00 local time on Aug. 12 would see a reduced system margin, with a shortfall estimated at about 1.2 gigawatts, while the current contingency requirement was 676 megawatts.

The operator also said about 1,000 megawatts of generation is excluded from the available system margin due to system constraints, and it encouraged market actions intended to increase short term system margins.

OilPrice notes that the operator said the notice does not indicate that blackouts are imminent or that there is insufficient generation to meet current demand, but it signals a desire for a larger safety cushion between demand and available supply during the eclipse hours.
