China highway operator apologises after mistranslated English signs
The state-owned Gansu Expressway Service Group said it will inspect and fix English-Chinese signage across its 78 pairs of service areas covering about 70% of the province.
A highway operator in Gansu province in northwestern China has apologized after an English sign at a service area was mistranslated, referring to a hot water room as an “open water rooms,” according to SCMP Economy.
The incident was shared on social media and added to a pattern of attention on signage errors in public facilities, including a late March episode at an airport in Guiyang where a passenger found multiple misspellings.
SCMP Economy reports that the Gansu Expressway Service Group removed the incorrect sign after it appeared online and issued an official notice outlining further steps. The company said it would carry out special inspections and rectifications across all service areas it manages, verify Chinese-English signs, and correct any identified errors immediately.
The notice also said the firm would set up a signage management system, including “review before installation” and periodic rechecks, and would improve its working mechanisms to enhance service quality and its public image.
