China insurer backs first commercial brain-computer interface surgery policy

PICC Property and Casualty said it signed the country’s first commercial insurance policy covering invasive BCI implantation surgery, helping lift related Hong Kong shares by 1.6 percent on Wednesday.

China has moved to accelerate the development of brain-computer interfaces, with state-linked initiatives spanning insurers, investment banks and local governments, according to SCMP Economy.

On Wednesday, PICC Property and Casualty, a major state-owned insurer, announced it signed what it described as China’s first commercial insurance policy covering the invasive surgery often needed to implant a BCI device in a patient’s brain.

The announcement prompted market gains for BCI-linked companies in Hong Kong. Shares of BCI-related firms rose 1.59 percent on Wednesday, while Shanghai Heartcare Medical Technology climbed 1.28 percent and software developer BrainAurora Medical Technology gained 1.65 percent.

PICC said the scheme was launched in partnership with a hospital affiliated with the Zhejiang University School of Medicine in Hangzhou, a tech hub that includes AI firm DeepSeek and humanoid robot maker Unitree Robotics.
