Zhu Rongji, architect of China’s reforms and WTO push, dies at 97
Zhu Rongji played a central role in China’s 2001 WTO accession, which supported an export boom during the country’s economic transformation.
Former Chinese premier Zhu Rongji, a key figure behind the nation’s economic reforms, died on Wednesday at age 97 after an illness, according to SCMP Economy.
Zhu is widely credited with driving reforms tied to China’s 2001 accession to the World Trade Organization, a move that helped pave the way for an export surge and China’s rise into the world’s second-largest economy.
SCMP Economy also notes that Zhu oversaw additional domestic market reforms, including the closure of hundreds of state-linked enterprises as part of efforts to reshape China’s economy.
